You know when someone uses the expression; “It feels like I got hit by a Mack Truck.” Well, we did and I’ll tell the amazing story How we Survived.
How we Survived Heading Home for the Holidays…
This is my story of how we survived getting hit by a Mack Truck. It was in the winter time just a few days before the Christmas Holiday. My husband had put our suitcases in the car and we were ready to get on the way. We, along with my seven and a half month old baby, were going upstate New York to visit our families for the Holidays. We had planned to stay about a week and then come back home. Before we pulled out of the driveway, we said a prayer, and started out on our way.
The weather was pretty good where we were. No snow, and not even rain. It was a nice and sunny day, but it was cold. I had dressed my baby girl in her pink snowsuit to keep her warm. We were happy and excited about seeing our families again. They were looking forward to seeing us as well; more so, happy to see the baby. Isn’t that how it usually is. The parents are more looking forward to seeing the grandkids than they are you. Anyway, we’ve got the radio going and are in very good spirits.
Prior to How we Survived, We were On our Way…
As we neared the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge, the roads were still clear. The sun was shining and we were singing along with the tunes on the radio. The baby was fine. I had everything I could think to bring for her, even her highchair. I was one of those moms who made sure that I was prepared with everything I needed for my baby. She is my love and joy and means the world to me. I felt like she was my miracle, after the episode of her delivery. You can read about that story in my article “Angels Are Real, My Experience With An Angel.
We were traveling in an old van that we had purchased about a year or so prior. We were young then and did not have much, so we did the best we could with what we had. Though we had little, we were still very blessed. When we got to the toll booth at the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge, the worker told us there was snow and ice, to be careful. So we took heed. We crossed over the bridge and on that side was like the difference between night and day. There was snow and ice everywhere.
How we Survived even through The Warning about the Snow Chains…
We stopped at a convenience store to get some snacks and cap off the gas tank. It was then my husband said that the LORD had spoken to him and told him to put the snow chains on. But did he listen?… NO! He said to himself and then told me that he will put them on when we stop again later down the road. Hindsight says he should have listened. Because, we certainly were not prepared for what was going to happen next.
Well, we settled back into the van in our seats; strapped my baby girl into her car seat and put our seat belts on. Then my husband pulled onto the road and we continued on our way. I took my baby out of her car seat to feed her. When she had finished her bottle, I began to burp her. She still had her snowsuit on. I had not taken it off of her to feed her because it was not that warm inside the van. As I was saying when she finished her bottle, I put her pacifier in her mouth, and as I was burping her, that’s when it all happened.
My story on How we Survived…
Suddenly, a really heavy wind came upon us and started pulling the trailer around. It was so heavy, the wind, that you could even hear it. Then the wind had pulled the trailer, which in turn, pulled the van around sliding on the ice into the ongoing traffic in the opposite lane. We got hit by one car, I could not tell what kind of car it was because I didn’t see it.
Well, if that wasn’t enough then we got hit by a Cadillac that sent us into a spin on the ice. By this time I am screaming Jesus!!!… Jesus!!!… Jesus!!!; and my husband is screaming Oh God!!!… Oh God!!!… Oh God!!! I had never been so afraid for my life. And, if that was not enough, you won’t believe what happened next.
How we Survived…the Mack Truck
As we are screaming for the LORD’s help. Now, to top that off… Here comes this big Mack Truck and we could tell that it couldn’t stop. How could it with all the ice on the road? We could see, in a sense, as we could tell from his driving, what he was thinking. He moved over into the other lane, but the gas station was there. If he had run into the gas station and hit the pumps it would have been much worse. So, the only thing he could do is head straight for us.
Seeing this, all we could do is to try and brace ourselves for what was to come next. Well, the truck hit us smack in the back of the van and sent the van and the trailer attached to it spiraling up in the air from one side of the four lane highway, all the way back over to the other side of the highway where the other directional traffic was, and into the ditch. This had to look like a scene in the movies to the bystanders. It was so surreal; I could not believe this was actually happening to us.
The Angels were there… That’s How we Survived!
I remember looking out the window and just seeing the ground moving so fast as the van was flying and spiraling in the air before we landed on the other side of the highway. The only thing that I could feel at that time was like I was floating in the air, as if the Angels were holding me in their arms. Yes… Angels are Real!
GOD heard our cries and sent his Angels to protect us and keep us safe in the midst of our storm of chaos. The bystanders were not expecting us to walk out of that monstrosity. They assumed we were dead. They were all wondering how we survived that horrendous event. Well, GOD had other plans. Thank you LORD!
In the midst of all that flying, spiraling and bumping, GOD’s Angels were holding us in their protective arms ensuring our safety. Didn’t GOD say that he will be there with us in the time of our storms. That he will never leave us nor forsake us. Praise the LORD!!!, GOD is SO GOOD!!! Even though my husband was disobedient in putting on those snow chains like the LORD had initially told him to do; He still charged his Angels to protect us from harm. That is how we survived getting hit by not just a Mack Truck, but two cars and a Mack Truck.
How we Survived After we Landed on the Other Side of the Highway…
As soon as we hit the ground it seemed like everything was quiet. I looked at my daughter, still in my arms, but we had landed on the floor behind the seat in the back part of the van. I was so thankful that I was able to hold onto her in all that chaos. And the only reason I was able to hold onto her was because she was wearing her snowsuit. Had it not been for that, she would have slipped out of my arms, and who knows what would have happened to her.
How we Survived
Thank You LORD!!! I give him all the credit for how we survived. When I looked at her face, she had pieces of glass from the broken windows all over her face. I immediately panicked and started praying in my mind that she would be alright and that she did not get cut from all that glass. The good thing was that her eyes were closed.
I slowly and gently removed the glass from her face. There was no bleeding, which was a great relief to me. Then I checked to see if there were any cuts on her face. There seemed to be no cuts. The good thing was, her pacifier was still in her mouth, so I knew there was no glass that got into her mouth. Hallelujah!
How we Survived: Help was already on the scene.
This was before I even tried to move or anything. How we survived was unbelievable to many, but not to us. We did not even hear the sirens of the ambulance or the police cars. All we knew is that someone was there, helping us out of the van. They had helped my husband out of the van first. Then I noticed that his seat was detached from the floor and had fallen on top of the baby’s car seat with him still in it.
At that very moment I realized that if I had not been holding my baby, that seat, along with my husband, would have fallen on top of her and crushed her. And she would not be here with us today. So that was another thing to be grateful for other than how we survived the accident.
How we Survived: In the Ambulance and Heading to the Hospital…
They had put my husband and I on a stretcher and loaded us into the ambulance. Then they proceeded to take our vitals. I remember as I was getting out of the van, my leg was hurting so much, it felt like it was broken. They had put that whatever thing you call it over our faces. One of the EMT’s was caring for my daughter while we were being strapped in. There were so many bystanders who had witnessed the accident that were wondering how we survived such a horrible accident. Needless to say the van was completely totaled.
How we Survived
As we entered the hospital on the stretchers, they were trying to hand my baby to me. However, because my leg was hurting so bad, I asked them if they could give her to her dad. He got angry because he didn’t want to scare her from the thing that they had put over our heads. So, they brought her back to me.
At this point she was crying because she didn’t know what was going on. She just heard her dad yelling at the nurses, so of course this scared her. I managed to calm her back down by singing to her. She was OK then. At this point, I was so happy and grateful to how we survived and we were all OK.
Meanwhile…
After a while the doctor came over to me and asked if I was feeling any pain. I told him about my leg. Then he asked me if it was broken. I answered him saying: “I don’t know, you’re the doctor, you tell me”. Then he looked at me as if I was trying to be difficult. He squeezed my leg and pulled on it. I yanked back and yelled in reaction to the pain. I really did not appreciate his bedside manner.
We stayed in the hospital a few hours for them to monitor us and wait for the test results and x-rays to come back. Once they confirmed that we had no broken bones, serious injuries or internal bleeding, they discharged us. But before we left we had asked how we would be able to get a rental being that our van was totaled.
Take a look at this short video of another incident where someone was protected by Angels:
How we Survived: Back Home Safe and Bruised, But Still Alive
Well, they called someone from the tow truck company to pick us up and take us to find a rental to get back home. They gave us a prescription for some pain medication before we left. We managed to get a rental after a few headaches. And we were fortunate to be able to locate the van and get some of our stuff that was not damaged from the accident. Then we headed back home in the rental.
By the time we drove into our driveway, I could not have been any happier to see my house. We were very blessed to be alive. And that is how we survived getting hit by a Mack Truck. The next morning when we awoke, that’s when the real pain had set in. Our bodies were both stiff, sore, and hurting so bad. We could barely get out of bed. We had to force ourselves to get up and move around just to keep from stiffening up. The pain had lasted for a few weeks before feeling normal again.

That’s how we survived. It was a miracle the angels performed. They cradled us in their arms and kept us safe. They kept us from being tossed and turned inside the vehicle and from being crushed. We are under GOD’s divine protection. Nothing is impossible if you trust in GOD. That’s how we survived. We trust in the Lord and always put him first in our lives. He is our source for everything. The power of life is in his hands. To learn more of Jesus Christ and receive the gift of salvation; You may get your free download of the Holy Bible here.
