I was scrolling through my phone and came across this very interesting and insightful video. As I listened to it I became very intrigued by the information. I noticed how the author or narrator of the video kept repeating certain things as it played on. However, with repetition comes remembrance, and further, you retain what you have heard. This is why teachers repeat things to the students in the classroom at school. The more information is repeated, the more likely you are to remember. So, in this case it makes sense because this information is an important factor that we should retain. When I kept hearing the repetition I was about to stop the video. But I kept listening when I heard something different that caught my attention.

Before I begin to spill the beans about what I heard in the video, I want to share with you, if you don’t already know about this. The pomegranate is classified as a fruit, although the video says otherwise.

Moreover, some argue that it is a nut because of its hard shell and the seeds inside of it. Whatever, fruit or nut it is something that is very good for you. And if you are blessed to have access to these then you have something precious. Not only is it a fruit but it also produces beautiful flowers. It is a fruit bearing shrub that you would mostly find in Iran and Middle East India. They are also cultivated in Arizona and Central Valley California. The beautiful flowers do two things. Some bear fruit while the others remain flowers.

The beautiful flowers transform into a wonderful fruit with a high content of polyphenols. The natural height of the shrub is from 16 to 33 feet tall. Well… In my book that classifies it as a tree. The fruit is referred to as a berry with a leathery type rind containing loads of juicy arils (seeds). The juicy seeds are the most edible part of the fruit.

Pomegranates have been around since the ancient biblical times. They were used to adorn the promised land, a land flowing with milk and honey. This highlighted its abundance in fertility. You will see in Deuteronomy 8:7-8 (KJV) it reads: For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills. 8. A land of wheat and barley , and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of oil, olive and honey.

Because it has such a profound Spiritual meaning to God’s people, King Solomon had integrated them within the design of the first temple. They were in the designs of the capitals of the columns on the porch of the temple. As you can reference in 1 Kings 7:18-20 (KJV), he named these two columns Jachin and Boaz. And he also used pomegranates to line the columns of the Holy Temple. It was also a known practice for the priests to have them adorned on their priestly garments. Moreover, the hem of their robes were adorned with hanging pomegranates and golden bells. Some of them were red along with others that were blue and purple.

Some biblical and spiritual interpretations use the abundance of seeds in the pomegranate as a symbol of repentance, God’s grace and mercy, and the opportunity for spiritual renewal. Showing the abundance of God’s grace and mercy, even in the midst of judgment. Another symbolic comparison to the hard exterior and the soft inside shows that although God’s divine correction may be harsh, he also seeks his mercy in his redemption. It is a symbol of life and God’s promise of spiritual renewal. For many readers, the pomegranates abundance of seeds can serve as a personal reminder of spiritual renewal, hope, and God’s mercy.

As it reads in Exodus 28:31(KJV), the beginning of the verse instructs the people to make a priestly robe for Aaron and the ephod of all blue. Then a little further in Exodus 28:33-34 (KJV) it reads as forth: And beneath upon the hem of it thou shall make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about. 34. A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe round about.

They were a symbol of divine blessings and prosperity for the people. And they were also fullness and fulfillment of God’s will. Therefore it has a connection with holiness and purity and even more so, a connection with the divine.

Just as the pomegranate encourages us to think about what we place into our bodies, there are many other aspects of our environment that we may want to consider as part of our overall wellness. You can explore another perspective in our article about the frequency of clothing and fabrics.

There is reference in the Bible to this fruit as well as others concerning the desolation in the land. In Joel 1:12 (KJV) it reads: The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth, the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered; because joy is withered away from the sons of men. The pomegranate is referenced as one of the few fruits that have dried up because of the desolation of the land and there was a cry out to the Lord.

We Will Get to the Healing Power of Pomegranates a Little Further Down in the Article. But I Just Want to Point Out More Biblical References

Although a pomegranate can contain hundreds of seeds, some Jewish traditions and later interpretations have associated the fruit’s abundance of seeds with the 613 commandments traditionally counted in the Book of Moses. These are the 1st five books of the Bible starting with Genesis and finishing with Deuteronomy. It is a symbolism of hope, spiritual renewal, and faithfulness.

In the Song of Solomon (KJV) the pomegranate is referenced to the beauty of a woman. It compares the cheeks of a bride behind her veil to that of 2 halves of a pomegranate. Throughout this book it speaks of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba (Makeda) expressing the beauty of their love to one another referencing the pomegranate. This is the symbolization of the intimacy and deep connection between lovers. It is a metaphor of beauty, desire, and deep affection. Not only does it resemble beauty and fertility but also renewal and rejuvenation of relationships.

Making pomegranates a part of your normal diet during pregnancy is a plus. Pomegranates can be a nutritious addition to a balanced diet during pregnancy. They provide nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, folate, and potassium, although nutritional needs during pregnancy vary from person to person. Pregnant women should discuss their individual nutritional needs and any dietary changes with their healthcare provider. Because they are high in Vitamin K, Calcium, Iron, Folate, Protein and Fiber as well as containing Vitamin C they offer a high dose of healthy attributes.

And the Vitamin C adds to collagen tissue maintenance and formation. Another great thing is the pomegranate is rich in polyphenols which are antioxidants helpful in preventing cell death. Researchers have investigated whether pomegranate and its polyphenols may have potential benefits related to pregnancy and maternal health, but more research is needed, and pomegranates should not be presented as a way to prevent pregnancy complications.

Research has also investigated whether pomegranate juice may influence vascular function and blood pressure, although ore research is needed to understand these effects and their relevance during pregnancy. And not to mention the folic acid in pomegranate juice is helpful in the growth and development of the fetus.

Pomegranates contain polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds that have been studied for their potential role in supporting overall health and protecting against oxidative stress. Pomegranate juice is particularly rich in polyphenolic compounds and has demonstrated antioxidant activity in research. [1]

The healing and medicinal properties of the pomegranates have attracted interest for centuries. Today researchers are studying the fruit’s antioxidants, polyphenols, and other naturally occurring compounds to better understand their potential role in supporting overall health and wellness.

From heart and circulatory health to digestion, skin, joint, and oral health, the potential healing power of pomegranates is quite impressive. Below are some of the most notable health benefits and traditional uses associated with this nutrient-rich fruit.

  • Antioxidant: Pomegranate juice contains polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds that can help protect cells from oxidative stress. Its antioxidant content has been compared with that of beverages such as Red wine and green tea, although antioxidant measurements can vary depending on the product and testing method. Because antioxidants and nutrition are closely connected to the body’s cellular processes, you may also want to learn more about mitochondria and metabolism and why these cellular powerhouses are so important to overall wellness.
  • Arterial Function: Research has investigated whether regular pomegranate consumption may support cardiovascular health, healthy blood pressure, and vascular function. Some clinical studies and systematic reviews have reported potentially favorable effects on blood pressure and certain cardiovascular risk factors, although results vary and more research is needed. [2][3]
  • Traditional Wellness Uses: Pomegranates have been valued in traditional food and wellness practices for centuries. Their antioxidant-rich compounds have prompted modern research into their potential role in supporting cellular and overall health, although terms such as “blood purifier” are traditional descriptions rather than established medical treatments.
  • Pomegranate and Cancer Research: In the field of Oncology the pomegranate is said to have considerable interest in its potential anti cancer properties. Pomegranate has attracted scientific interests for its potential anticancer properties. Laboratory and preclinical research has investigated whether compounds found in pomegranate may influence cellular pathways involved with cancer development and programmed cell death. However, laboratory findings should not be interpreted to mean that eating pomegranate or drinking its juice can treat or cure cancer in humans. [6]
  • Cardiovascular System: Pomegranate has a long history of traditional use, and modern research has examined whether its polyphenols may support cardiovascular and vascular health. Some studies have reported potentially beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk factors, although pomegranate should not be considered a treatment for heart disease. [2][3] Pomegranates contain compounds such as punicalagin and ellagic acid that have been studied for their antioxidant and potential anti-inflammatory properties. However, these findings do not establish pomegranate as a treatment or preventative therapy for heart disease or cancer.

The next 5 healing and medicinal properties extend to several other areas of wellness. From supporting digestive and metabolic health to promoting healthy circulation and protecting the body from oxidative stress, this remarkable fruit continues to show why it has been valued throughout history. Here are five more noteworthy properties to consider:

  • Controls Cholesterol: Some research has investigated whether pomegranate consumption may support healthy cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health. Research has examined pomegranate’s potential effects on cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk factors. Some studies have reported improvements in total cholesterol or HDL levels, but findings for LDL cholesterol have been inconsistent. [4][5]
  • Cuts and Wounds: Pomegranate peel and other parts of the plant have been investigated for antimicrobial and wound-related properties, particularly in laboratory and traditional-use settings. However, pomegranate products should not replace appropriate medical care for wounds or infections.
  • Diabetes – Blood Sugar Control: Researchers have studied pomegranate and its polyphenols for their potential effects on blood glucose and metabolic health. Some studies have reported favorable changes in blood sugar measures, but evidence is not sufficient to consider pomegranate a treatment for diabetes or replacement for diabetes care. [3] The fiber content contributes to better blood sugar control by slowing down carbohydrate absorption. Because blood sugar balance is closely connected to dietary choices, you may also want to read our guide explaining why sugar is bad and the effects of sugar on the body,
  • Diarrhea and Dysentery: The Egyptians and the Chinese would use the juice of the pomegranate to relieve diarrhea and dysentery due to the astringent properties that help to reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. Historically, pomegranate preparations where used in Egyptian and Chinese practices for digestive complaints such as diarrhea and dysentery. These traditional uses are interesting from a historical perspective, but they should not replace medical evaluation or treatment for diarrhea or dysentery.
  • Gut Health: Pomegranates contain fiber and polyphenols that are being studied for their potential relationship with digestive and gut health. Eating the whole fruit provides fiber that can contribute to a balanced diet and normal digestive function. Some researchers feel the consumption of pomegranate juice can significantly improve gut health. Its fiber content aids in regulating bowel movement and prevents issues like constipation. The antioxidants found in the juice also protects the gastric lining from damage and reduces the risk of ulcers contributing to a healthier digestive system overall.

There are still more healing and medicinal properties of pomegranates worth exploring. These final five highlight additional ways pomegranates may support overall wellness, including joint, oral, reproductive, and skin health. Let’s take a look at these final pomegranate health benefits.

  • Fight Infections: The ancient Egyptians used the pomegranate for infections due to the healing properties in the juice from the seeds. It also has use as a vermifuge to dispel intestinal parasites. The use of the bark is in remedies for helping to combat bacterial infections and digestive issues. However, laboratory findings do not establish pomegranate as a treatment for human infections.
  • Joint Health: Pomegranates are also familiar with improving joint health. The extracts have been studied for their anti-inflammatory properties, including their potential ability to reduce inflammation in the joints and alleviate symptoms in conditions like arthritis. The antioxidants can inhibit enzymes that degrade cartilage which could in turn preserve joint health and reduce discomfort associated with joint wear and tear. But more human evidence is needed before drawing conclusions about their ability to relieve arthritis symptoms.
  • Oral Health: In oral health, extracts of the pomegranate have been demonstrated to have antimicrobial effects that can help prevent plaque formation and gingivitis. Studies have shown that mouthwashes containing pomegranate extracts can play a role in reducing bacterial growth in the mouth and possibly improving overall oral health, although more research is needed before considering pomegranate as a substitute for regular dental care.
  • Reproductive Health: Preliminary research has investigated whether pomegranate consumption may influence aspects of reproductive health, including sperm quality and erectile function due to its ability to enhance blood flow and reduce oxidative damage in tissues. These findings are still developing, and pomegranate should not be considered a proven treatment for infertility or sexual dysfunction.
  • Skin Health: The antioxidants found in pomegranates have generated interest in skin health and protection from oxidative stress. Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in pomegranates have been studied for their potential role in skin health. Pomegranate extracts and oils are also used in some cosmetic formulations, but these products should not be considered a replacement for proven sun protection or dermatological care.

I like the way the narrator ties the pomegranate back to the scriptures of the Bible. The way he correlates the profound spiritual meaning of the pomegranate with the way in which we as followers of Christ should live our lives. He goes on to say just like the pomegranate being full of seeds, we should fill our lives with fruits that reflect our faith and devotion.

Further, the pomegranate with all of its seeds remind us that life is full of opportunities to flourish spiritually. Just as each seed represents a promise of life, they also symbolize the gifts and blessings that God places within our reach. He speaks of the spiritual fruits of love, peace, patience and kindness that matter in our lives and the people around us. These qualities remind us of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and the way our faith should reflect in our everyday lives.

Each seed represents the opportunity to change. Take heed to plant the spiritual seeds that can transform your life. Your acts of faith and love can spread hope and uplift others around the world. Nurture the seed of faith that God has planted in us. It is time for us to reflect upon the fruits we are producing. Every seed we nurture contributes to a legacy that transcends this life into God’s kingdom. Reflect on yourself and be mindful that you reflect the Fruits of the Holy Spirit in your everyday life.

My first experience with pomegranates was in elementary school in the second grade. One of the parents had brought in some candied pomegranates. I thought they were candied apples. That’s what they looked like anyway. Being that I never saw a pomegranate before, I thought it was strange looking for an apple. She had cut them up in front of the class and gave us each a quarter piece. I was expecting the seeds to be sweet, however, they had a bittersweet taste. And the texture of them was also strange only because I never had it before.

That was the first and last time I had ever seen a pomegranate. Although I have had pomegranate juice from time to time. The taste is not one that you crave for. Therefore, I did not drink it much.

But now that I have learned the beneficial qualities and all the healing properties I have started drinking it on a regular basis. After 2 months of drinking it almost every day, I have noticed that I have more energy and I also no longer wake up in the middle of the night having to massage my legs and walk to get the blood circulation back into them. And my hands don’t get numb anymore. I will continue to drink this as a part of my normal diet.

If you are also learning how to make healthier choices by reducing excessive added sugar, read our guide on Sugar Is Bad for You and the effects of sugar on the body.

My experience is personal and should not be interpreted as evidence that pomegranate juice will produce the same results for everyone. If you experience numbness, circulation problems, persistent leg discomfort, or other concerning symptoms, consult with a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on dietary changes alone.

The Pomegranate has held great value for centuries for its healing properties and the abilities to enhance health on multiple levels and it still does today. Beyond being a symbol of fertility and prosperity it also holds significance in implications in terms of judgment and redemption in the Bible. In scripture it notoriously represents abundance and divine blessings, but also serves as a reminder of God’s judgment upon those who stray from his ways. The symbolic use of it in the Bible reveals how God utilizes elements of nature to communicate both condemnation and the hope of redemption. There are references in several scriptures that warn of disobedience and its consequences.

Now that you know about the pomegranate and its amazing healing properties, and if it fits into your dietary needs and preferences, you may consider enjoying the whole fruit or its juice as part of a varied, balanced diet. Choosing nutrient-rich whole foods is one part of maintaining a balanced approach to nutrition.
